The original City Hall (10,000 S.F.) was sited on an elongated 2.2 acre parcel three blocks from the town plaza to facilitate downtown renovation and anticipated expansion of the facility and associated parking. Fifteen years later, the City found they needed an additional 10,000 S.F. to consolidate off-site administrative space and add a conference center that served the City Council and community needs.
The design of the expansion extends many of the fundamental characteristics of the original City Hall, including transparency to the public, “front yard” landscaping, a plinth, location of and access to interior public spaces, materials and roof pitch. Unique to the expansion is the addition of a second floor to accommodate a need for more net floor area than the original site design anticipated.
A large portion of the second level is an outdoor patio which can be used for public events as well as day-to-day employee activities. Our role in the project covered Strategic Planning, Design and Planning, Construction, and Post Occupancy. Careful, strategic planning and execution met the City’s needs and earned the project an AIA Redwood Empire Chapter Design Awards, Merit Award.
