The Barlow project transformed a dilapidated, contaminated site into a home for makers and purveyors of food, wine and art. It’s a mixed use, light industrial/retail space that has helped build an arena for passionate creators to interact with their patrons and enrich the North Bay community.
Because of the condition of many of the existing buildings, the project required substantial demolition and reconstruction. To the extent it was possible, existing buildings within the 11 acre development were preserved, reconstructed, and repurposed to fit the needs of the restaurants, breweries, wineries and retail shops that now occupy the space.
The new Barlow structures share a simple design that is both agricultural and industrial in nature. The building materials include corrugated metal and wood board with batten siding, standing seam metal roofing and sectional roll-up glass paneled doors for each leased space. The roof profile on the newer buildings utilizes a clearstory window monitor that brings daylight into the tenant spaces and adds interest to the exterior.
Extensive landscaping throughout the project includes edible herbs, plants and fruit bearing trees, providing a walkable experience where visitors can enjoy the agricultural bounty of the region. There is ample public seating, play areas for children and adults alike, and a beautiful outdoor space for weddings and community gatherings. The Barlow is truly a space that gives back to, and highlights the best of, Sonoma County.
We've assisted many of The Barlow's occupants in realizing a vision for their establishments. we've played a part in designing are: Community Market, Kosta Browne Winery, Zazu Kitchen + Farm, and many others.
