
The Windsor Veterans Village is a new construction project that provides 60 rental units (59 low-income affordable housing units and a two-bedroom management unit), a large park-like setting and community center for underserved, homeless Veterans. Residents will utilize VASH Vouchers with affordability will ranging from 0% to 50% of the area median income. Through this development UHC and VRC connect to addresses the complex realities of veterans facing personal crises and the lack of supportive services to help them, and diligently put in place innovative programs to effectively fill the gaps in available assistance programs. Veterans heal better, quicker, and lead more enriched lives when they live and heal in a community of their peers. The goal will be to provide a true continuum of care or as close to it on the site with seven dimensions of wellness will be addressed; Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social, Occupational, Spiritual, and Environmental wellness will be the guiding principles of the facility. Services, designed to enhance residents’ lives will include employment and training services, behavioral health services, intensive case management services, peer supports, education, daily living classes, anger management, and family reunification. The Windsor Veterans Village will be a true community collaboration of services to enhance and enrich the lives of both the permanent residents and the transitional residents.
The Windsor Veterans Village is proposed to have slab-on-grade foundations and has been designed in an architectural style that reflects and enhances the surrounding neighborhood. The WVV project will consist of a single level and two-story, garden style buildings containing 48 one-bedroom apartments ranging from 625 sf to 692 sf, 12 two-bedroom apartments ranging from 700-850 sf, and a freestanding 4,000 sf community center. All 60 units and the site will be ADA compliant and will include an emergency call systemn. Units also include a covered patio/balcony, Energy Star rated dishwasher, and refrigerator, range, garbage disposal, ceiling fan, and each unit is wired for cable television. The community is designed to LEED Silver standards with sustanably designed ladscaping providng a park-like setting and the units as well as energy efficient design and building materials utilized to reduce energy usage and costs for tenants. This attractively designed project for veterans will serve the targeted population by providing accessibility to all units and common spaces, and providing safe environment for all tenants to live and thrive.
The site design required special attention to respect and preserve the wetland areas and flood plain adjacent to the Starr Creek. Site development required wetlands mitigation. The grounds incorporates a working, edible landscape in a park-like settingaround courtyards, private patios, walways as well as recrational areas. Surrounding site amenities including a petanque court, half basketball court, fitness station, tot lot playground, and BBQ area for gatherings.
